Reasons to Give
Tithing (giving 10% of your income to God) is the standard for giving in the Old Testament. Abraham tithed (Genesis 14:20). Jacob promised to give God a tenth of his income (Genesis 28:22). God also promises a blessing to those who practice the tithe. Malachi 3:10 says, “Bring the full tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house; and thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing.”
It is important to note that the New Testament encourages us to even greater generosity. Luke records an instance of super-abundant giving: “Jesus looked up and saw rich people putting their gifts into the treasury; he also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. He said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; for all of them have contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.”
Giving our time, talents, and treasure is an expression of our Christian discipleship. All our expressions of giving make ministry possible. Without the generosity of God’s people, the church would be unable to care for the flock of God, alleviate human suffering, and effectively proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to the world.
